Red wine is our favorite way to unwind after a long day of work; it's the hostess gift we tote to every housewarming and Friendsgiving gathering; and it's the perfect color inspiration for fall lipstick. If you're wary of using an oxblood color on your face, don't be. Just like there's excitement in pouring a new glass of pinot or merlot that you've never sipped before, you can’t go wrong with testing out a new vampy lipstick.
Celebrity makeup artist Paul Blanch tells Refinery29 that picking out a flattering burgundy lipstick is easy, especially once you understand your undertones. "To find your undertone look at your wrists: If your veins are bluish, then you’re cool-toned. If they appear more green (or yellow), then your undertones are warm," he says. If you can't decide either way, then it's likely your undertones are neutral. In fact, according to the pros, burgundy can look good on anyone.
There are tons of different burgundy shades to choose from. "Ultimately, makeup is fun, and it's all about trying a bunch to see what you like," says Blanch. So to help you find your favorite before you start holiday party hopping, we tapped the pros for their picks. Find them all ahead.

If You Have Cool Undertones
Buffy Saint Marie, makeup artist at The Red Door Salon and Spa on 5th Avenue in New York City, recommends burgundy lip colors with blue undertones if your complexion is on the cool side. "Beauty Bakerie makes a few of my favorites," she says, noting that Raspberry Tiramisu is a top pick. "The color is really deep, goes on smooth, and doesn't bleed."

Celebrity makeup artist Adam Breuchaud loves this creamy NARS formula in the shade Fast Ride for cool undertones. It's a sheer mulberry tint that you can dab on for a "blushed lip" effect.

Blanch doesn't stick to any undertone rules, and he believes purple can work on anyone. "It's really all about the application of the lipstick and feeling confident," he says. "Pat McGrath's Full Blooded lipstick is great because it has a velvet texture without being dry." This shade has a cool purple tint that Blanch loves for all complexions.

"I love a burgundy with brown tones for warm complexions," Breuchaud says. If you prefer a sheer finish, he swears by this Clinique lipstick in Black Honey. "It's super creamy and can also be used on your cheeks to create a monochromatic look."

If You Have Neutral Undertones
For a burgundy lip color that won't budge through a glass of wine, put on Maybelline's Matte Ink formula in the shade Voyager. It's an opaque maroon shade that isn't too brown or too purple. It dries down to a comfy matte finish and won't rub off on your wine glass.

This Charlotte Tilbury tube in Glastonberry is a vampy purple with hints of brown. Saint Marie approves this color for all complexions, especially those with neutral undertones.

Milani's Color Statement Lipstick in Red After Dark is where brown meets purple, and it's great if you aren't too warm or too cool. One swipe is all you need for an opaque burgundy color, and the best part: It'll only set you back four bucks.
