Maj. General Mading Biar Mading speaking to Gurtong in JubaCalm has been restored after fierce clash in Akop sub-County, Tonj County of Warap State, Hon. K. Mawein Dhor Ariik, Member of Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly from Tonj has confirmed.

Fierce clashes were witnessed between unidentified armed men and the police in Tonj on Monday. Hon. Mawein said yesterday that, the assailants killed innocent civilians and raided cattle in the melee.

“900 people were displaced frpm three sub-counties of Rual Bet, Marialow and Alabat,” Mawein said, adding that; “they looted 500 cattle and killed 50 people.”

The unknown attackers are suspected to have come from a group affiliated to the militia leader Peter Gadeth, a renegade General who is the latest to break away from the Sudan People’s Liberation Army, SPLA.

These insecurity threats came following recent fights in Southern Kordofan and Abyei region leading to thousands being displaced to Warap State according to the United Nations.

The South Sudan Police Spokesperson Maj. General Mading Biar Mading exclusively confirmed to the Gurtong this yesterday that, the situation had calmed down. He also affirmed that, the armed men were reported to have looted cattle, killed and displaced hundreds of civilians.

Hon. K. Mawein said the incident was a surprise attack. The attackers were well armed and carried their operation in a specialized manner.

He pointed out that, the act has created fears and tension among residents in the County as many stay in suspicion of being attacked any time. He however, said the situation in the County was now calm.
