Speaking during the historic opening of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs offices, the president described the ministry as a symbolic government institution.

“This building will be a symbolic government institution which will provide a conducive atmosphere to promote multiparty democracy and best Parliamentary practices and good governance,” President Kiir said.

“Am happy about what has been done through this Ministry; the passing of the Political party Act, National Election Act and the on-going constitution review process all these things are emanating from this office. I look forward to really many more critical bills to be passed in the coming months,” he said.

“The Coordination that they will be doing between the National Legislature and the Executive plus the coordination by the States government will always be supported by my office, in whatever capacity that we can do to promote the Ministry,” President Kiir stressed.

“I don’t think that all these things can be achieved unless people agree to do them. If you accept the coordination done by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs between the National Legislature and National Executive, then yes there can be improvement,” he added.

In the same occasion, the Speaker of the National Legislative Assembly, Rt. Hon. James Wani Igga revealed that the Assembly is lacking offices.

During the opening of the Assembly this year the sitting had to be transferred to Freedom Hall in order to accommodate all the members.

The speaker made it public by requesting the President particularly the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning to allocate funds for the construction of more offices.

“We are not a rubber stamp and I want to assure everybody here that we are doing our work but through maximum cooperation. This should be reflected at the State levels. There is a call for the replacement of the Speaker at the local Assemblies with very clumsy reason when we study them at the level of the state,” Wani said.

“We have to be realistic because those pity and local problems we have no time to legislate, or even fear to oversee the executive with the fear of dissolution of the Assembly,” he added.

The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Michael Makuei Lueth was pleased mentioning that the Ministry was housed in various other Ministers; Ministry of Labour, Public Services and Human Resource Development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister sits at the National Legislative Assembly.

“This is will be the first time for the family of this Ministry to come under one chair,” Makuei said.

“If we are entering this building we are starting as of today, and we will beginning to face the problems that we were not feeling when we were being accommodated with others,” he added.
