The state Education Ministry officials have disclosed that the team, led by advisor William Ater Machiek is charged with responsibility to finding out level of pupils, students and teachers’ enrolments.

Additionally, the team according to officials is expected to listen to challenges facing schools in the State and Counties.

The assessment is expected to cover primary schools both public and private, Secondary schools, vocational centres and alternative education system respectively.

The head of the team upon arrival to Torit yesterday told the press that the assessment team would be divided into sub-groups to cover counties.

Earlier this Month, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and Youth and Sports in Eastern Equatoria State released its planned activities for 2013-2014 financial year with an overall goal to increase literacy as basis to promote development in the fledgling nation.

The Minister, Michael Lopuke Lotyam vowed the Ministry was firmly committed to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

As he his Ministry Policy Statement to the State Legislative Assembly, in Torit, Hon. Lopuke disclosed that the Ministry would employ all the necessary mechanisms seeking to increase access general education system and promote equity saying education shall be accessible to all citizens in the state with opportunities being availed to all residents regardless of age.

He affirmed one of the Ministry’s strategies would include continuous efforts to clean its payroll through auditing apart from recruiting more experts with continuous capacity building and appraisal of staff.

The leader pledged that his Ministry would help all those who have been acting in various positions to be confirmed with respective grades.

The Ministry would launch educational needs’ assessment, institutional gaps including planning and management of Ministry administration.

In order to realise a long term support to the sector, Lopuke said the Ministry would launch a continuous lobby for scholarships for education Managers, Teachers and students.

He further disclosed that the Ministry sought to promote a standardized system of planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all the Ministry’s activities.

As part of bigger dreams of the Ministry, the Minister announced that constructions and renovations of eight model Boarding secondary schools with twelve secondary schools and thirty primary schools, would soon begin.

Apart from planning to drill 50 boreholes in some of the schools in the state, the Ministry plans to procure 12 land cruiser double cabins with two land cruiser pick-ups to easy movement.

It will also launch recruitments of 2,400 teachers for ECD-Educational Centres.

The Ministry plans to promote co-curricular activities or sports at all levels.

Formation of clubs and training of teachers and pupils on special needs, HIV/AIDs, life skills and peace education by the Ministry mismanagement remains key plan.

The Ministry will develop policies favouring girl-child education, private schools and the introduction of girls’ and boys’ scouts guide movement in schools to enhance excellent demonstration when in action.

The Ministry will also promote pre-service and in-service training programs apart from continuous provision of textbooks, other learning materials and teachers’ guide.

South Sudan literacy rate stands at 27 per cent according to a latest statement released by the national Ministry of Education in collaboration with UNESCO, making the new nation one of the least literate in the world.

Statistics estimate that 2.2 million people between the ages of 15 and 40 are illiterate and that only 1 in 10 women are able to read and write.
