Stung by protests over land acquisition in Bhatta-Parsaul, chief minister Mayawati has called a meeting with farmer leaders in the state capital on Thursday.
A delegation of farmer leaders, led by Bharatiya Kisan Union’s Rakesh Tikait, has arrived in the city and is camping at the VVIP guest house. It’s a very different treatment: only two months ago five farmers, who tried to meet governor B L Joshi to narrate their plight were arrested.
Congress was the first to cash in on the farmers’ discontent last month when Rahul Gandhi paid a surprise visit to the troubled twin hamlets in Greater Noida and got arrested at midnight. The party kept the issue alive, but Mayawati may take the wind out of Congress’s planned kisan mahapanchayat next week when state president Rita Bahugana Joshi is to meet farmers on the sprawling farms of Bakshi ka Talab.
Senior officers from half a dozen departments have been asked to attend the first-ever kisan panchayat to be hosted by Mayawati. "The chief minister felt that a proper solution to farmers’ problems could be found only through direct talks with them. She is also in favour of taking the decision with the consent of farmers," said a government spokesperson.

Thursday’s panchayat could be Mayawati’s way of settling scores with the Congress, which has pegged its election campaign on the "anti-farmer" face of the UP chief minister. She could also announce a revised land acquisition and compensation policy on Thursday, further blunting Congress attack.
