Authorities have confirmed that at least seven person died during a fierce firefight between militants and the army in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Sunday. The deceased include four militants, two army men and a civilian, whereas almost 20 more civilians sustained injuries when security forces allegedly fired on a mob during protests near the site after the end of the encounter.

In result of the incident, the separatists called for shutdown tomorrow against the civilian killings while J&K DGP S P Vaid exampled the whole situation. According to Vaid, security forces received specific information about presence of militants so the police, army and paramilitary personnel laid siege around Nagabal village in Frisal area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district in the early hours today. He explained that “during the search operation, the security personnel zeroed-in on a residential house, where there was information that a group of militants were hiding. During searches, the security personnel did not find anything. They again searched the house and again came across nothing.”

According to Vaid, a hideout that was not visible earlier was discovered during the third search. He elucidated that “when the hideout was exposed, militants fired from AK-47 rifles towards the security personnel. The fire was returned by the troops and in the ensuing gunfight, four militants were killed”. The official statement alleged that two army men and the house owner were also killed in the fire fight while three soldiers were injured, adding the injured soldiers were hospitalised.
