Former Chief Justice Renato Corona addressed the gathering at the 17th anniversary convention of the Philippines Women Judges Association Inc. and encouraged all female judges to take a stand against the “one-man-rule” in the judiciary system which was initiated by the late Supreme Court Associate Justice Cecilia Munoz-Palma.

He shared a few words during his speech about the importance to protect the real meaning to rule of law, independence of courts, and democracy other than raising issues such as his impeachment court determining if he is fit for the office or no. He also said that the series of events taking place in the country seem to take the nation towards the “one-man-rule”.

He said, “Executive action aims to shield or shackle judicial independence, undermine the rule of law and erode the system of governance particularly the principle of the mechanism of checks and balances. We are fighting for judicial independence, to shield the judiciary from improper influence and pressure from any grave abuse of discretion committed by any unit or agency of the Philippine government. Justice can only be effective if those who seek it from our courts leave our courts with full satisfaction that justice has been served and done”.

Other significant members attending the convention included Justice Estella Perlas-Bernabe, Justice Leonardo De Castro, and the Mayor of Manila Alfredo Lim.
