The Defense panel of the impeachment trial of the former chief justice Renato Corona clarified before the court that it is not necessary for Corona to give itemized details of the deposits of the Statement of Liabilities, Assets, and Net Worth.

It is only necessary that the totals of the statement must be explained by the beholder and not each transaction and item in the statement. The issue was raised on the hearing held on Monday where a senior defense representator Joel Bodegon debated on the issue with the head of the defence council Serafin Cuevas absent from the court for the first time ever since the beginning of the impeachment court due to illness.

At the beginning of the session, the presiding officer of the impeachment court Juan Pounce Enrile was informed by one of the representatives of the defense council. He said, “He [Cuevas] is indisposed. I’ll be acting as lead counsel of the defense”.

He also discussed in the court that Corona does not need to explain every single item in his Statement of Liabilities, Assets, and Net Worth (SLAN). Although he agreed that the aggregates of SLAN do need to be explained.
