The Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) declared on Friday that the claims made by Save Malaysia, Stop Lynas (SMSL) are incorrect as there are no dangerous radiations in the region of Bukit Merah.

The special advisor of the director general of AELB, Noorhasnah Khairullah, spoke to the media and informed that the radiations in the region of Bukit Merah have natural origins and the Lnyas plant has nothing to do with it. He said, “In some areas it is a bit high, such as at Pasir Hitam, Langkawi, it is 2.2 millisievert a year”.

SMLS, on the other hand, is claiming that the rising radiation levels in the region are a result of the advanced machinery and technology utilized in the Lynas plant which is endangering the lives of people in the nearby localities. They claim that the Asian Rare Earth (ARE) at the chemical plant of Mitsubishi is the cause of the raised radiation levels.

Chairperson of SMSL Tan Bun Teet said, “The radiation emission here is 2.0 millisievert (mSv) per year. If we hang around here long enough, our health will be affected. “We are worried that what had happened here would happen in Kuantan.”

As per the safety standards for the residents in the area, the radiation needs to be limited to 1.0 millisievert per year, which the SMSL now claims is double and affecting the people of Malaysia badly.
