Two Pilipino sentenced to death in China

Two Philippine nationals have been sentenced to death on Friday in China over the crime of drug trafficking.

The spokesperson of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Raul Hernandez, informed the media about the news giving details that a man and a woman were sentenced to death for drug trafficking in China. The punishment was announced by the judge of Intermediate Court of Hangzhou People. The accused were arrested from the Hangzhou International Airport in China in possession of 12 kilograms of heroin, which was seized upon being discovered. The accused were taken in custody and a case was filed on them. The proceedings of the court continued for about a year. The two criminals were arrested in January the last year.

Hernandez said, “Two Filipinos, a male and a female, were sentenced to death by the Hangzhou People’s Intermediate Court. The Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai will assist them in their appeal before a higher tribunal. The two were given legal assistance throughout their trial.”

The accused had entered China from Dubai and the male criminal has been given two years for reprieve whereas the female was not. The names and the identity of the accused have not been released on the media. Appeal for review of the punishment to higher courts has been made.
