There have been two accidents at the junction of Rochaor Road and Victoria Street in two weeks in the last month. A Ferrari had a collision with a Comfort taxi after violating the red traffic lights. Consequently, three people died and two were injured.

Exactly after two weeks, Kelvin Seah Koon Yong also smashed a taxi at the same intersection. Seah has been charged for the violation and drink-driving. An in-car camera caught the accident and it was seen that this accident was very much similar to the fatal Ferrari crash video.

The possible reasons that have been pointed out that could have led to these accidents might be the distance between the traffic light and the building on the left, the traffic light is close to the building and might not be seen by some drivers. Another reason could be the missing overhead traffic signal and the plant hedges on the right that might block the traffic lights for the driver.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said, instead of waiting till 2013, the team has decided to improve road safety at the Victoria Street junction by bringing the installation forward that would follow feedback and suggestions from the public.

LTA had synchronized the signals at the junction with those of the Pedestrian crossing linking Bugis Junction and Bugis Village, so that they turn green at the same time. The overhead traffic lights will result in a narrowing of the pedestrian footpath there until full road reinstatement works arising from the construction of the Downtown Line are finished by the middle of 2013.

To make the junction safer, works to install the overhead traffic lights will begin tomorrow and the signals are expected to start operating from next week, reported by LTA today.
