"The people of Manitoba are shocked by the unimaginable tragedy that has struck Pakistan and want to express their deep sorrow over the many deaths and their concern for the plight of the displaced people," Selinger said. "It is the hope of the Province of Manitoba that this emergency assistance money will quickly find those in greatest need."
Floodwaters swept through hundreds of villages in Pakistan’s main province of Punjab on Aug. 3, destroying homes and crops and forcing mass evacuations. This year’s monsoon season has created the worst flooding in living memory, leaving more than 1,500 dead and disrupting the lives of more than 3.2 million people.
The Manitoba Council for International Co-operation (MCIC) is a coalition of organizations involved in international development and social issues.
"MCIC is world renowned for its ability to identify on-the-ground needs in disaster-struck areas, so we are confident that this money will be effective in delivering aid to the people of Pakistan," Selinger said.
