Nunavut man shot dead by a Mounties

Mounties shot a Nunavut man dead on Tuesday. Apparently, the man was approaching towards an RCMP officer with a “wielding a weapon and uttering threats” so he opened fire in self-defense.

"This deliberate targeting of our members at their residences is deeply disturbing,” RCMP Supt. Hilton Smee told reporters at a news conference. “It is a reminder of the great risk that our members deal with day to day in protecting in the communities that we live in and serve."

The police was at Igloolik checking on a man at his home in the evening when the incident took place. RCMP did not give any details about the weapon the man had. They provided First Aid at the scene and rushed him to the local health centre where he was reported dead.

RCMP has not yet released the identity of the alleged attacker. Also, one officer was wounded but he survived. The Major Crimes Unit from Iqaluit has been called in and a neutral body of police is likely to investigate the incident.
