Consumers let money roll, economy turns out to be doing better than expected

In the first three months of this year, the Dutch economy appears to have not played so badly. Compared to the last months of 2024, the economy grew by 0.4 percent in the first quarter.

The new calculation of the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) gives a completely different picture of the economy than in the first calculation of eight weeks ago. Then the CBS concluded that the economy by 0.1 percent only minimal has grown.

That small growth was then because the government issued more money. More money went to healthcare and the number of civil servants grew.

But now that Statistics Netherlands has more figures, it appears that consumers have also let the money roll in the first quarter of this year. Zij gaven meer uit aan goederen, diensten en consumptie.

According to the CBS, the difference with the first calculation is mainly due to households, which turned out to be a lot more positive with making spending. The new figures are a nice boost. Earlier, consumers were expected a lot more careful would be due to all the unrest in the world.
