A British fighter jet has escorted a Qatar Airways passenger plane into Manchester Airport on Tuesday afternoon “as a result of information received by the pilot about a possible device on board”.

The Airbus A330 jet, flying from the airline’s Doha hub to Manchester 269 passengers and 13 crew, was escorted to the airport by Royal Air Force fighter jets after the revelations that a passenger had brought “a device” on board.

The alert began as the passenger plane, a Qatar Airbus A330, was approaching the airport.

Qatar Airways have stated that crew had received a threat about the presence of a possible device of threatening nature on board and that “QatarAirways immediately took all the necessary precautions to alert British authorities”.

After being landed, it is understood that armed officers boarded the plane placing a passenger under arrest “on suspicion of making a hoax bomb threat.”

According to a spokesperson for the Manchester Airport, the airport was reported to be shut down from around 25 minutes, will all flights in and out either suspended or some inbound flights diverted to other airports.

However, the airport is reported to be operating normally now.

Manchester police has claimed the incident was being treated as a full emergency, while stressing it was not known if this was a genuine threat.

Greater Manchester Police has told: “A passenger has been taken off the plane by officers at Manchester Airport. We will work to get others off as swiftly and safely as possible.”

Police say that an investigation is still in process.
