The grandmother on death row in Bali for smuggling £1.6million of cocaine, 57-year-old Lindsay Sandiford, has pleaded for help from Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond. The Cheltenham, Glos, resident alleged that her time “is running out” and she could be facing a firing squad in weeks. Sandiford made the appeal just a month ahead when Mr. Hammond is scheduled to visit Indonesia.

According to Sandiford, she does not have money for lawyers and has received very little help from the Foreign Office. Whereas on the other hand, the Foreign Office claims to be “ready to provide support.” Sandiford was arrested in Bali with the cocaine as she arrived from Thailand in May 2012. She claims to have been forced to transport the drugs to protect her son, whose safety was at stake. Currently, Sandiford lacks any legal representation and that means she might even be denied the opportunity to fully challenge her death penalty and the right to file for clemency. In her remarks, Sandiford alleged to have received very little or no help from the Foreign Office since her arrest.

On the other hand, the Foreign Office says it has consistently provided and offered consular support to Sandiford but she has currently declined to accept. A spokesman in the British embassy in the Indonesian capital Jakarta alleged that “we are closely following Lindsay Sandiford’s case in Indonesia,” adding that “the UK strongly opposes the death penalty in all circumstances without exception. We have made representations about the death penalty to the Indonesian government, and we will continue to do so.”
