The wealthiest lawmaker in the House of Commons, multimillionaire Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith, has announced to enter the race to succeed London mayor Boris Johnson if his constituents agree. According to Mr. Goldsmith, he will spend tens of thousands of pounds in order to conduct a postal ballot of the 77,000 registered voters in his constituency so that he can acquire their permission to stand in next year’s mayoral election.

The MP worth £280m stated that “I have just been re-elected as MP and it’s important to know whether or not my constituents are happy for me to run for mayor,” adding that “they must have the right to say no and it is now up to them to decide without interference.” Mr. Goldsmith succeeded in swelling his vote bank from 4,000 to 23,000 at last month’s general election. He mentioned in a covering letter that he had “been approached by many people from across the political spectrum and none, urging me to put my name forward to the Conservative candidate for mayor of London”.

Goldsmith has allowed constituents to vote until June 22. Many suspect that since Conservatives were looking for a “name” to run as the party’s candidate, Mr Johnson allegedly convinced Mr Goldsmith to stand. Even though the outgoing mayor will not officially endorse any of the Tory contenders, the two old Etonians are believed to share similar views on a range of issues.
