ARENA 1 is an exhibition space founded by Santa Monica Art Studios directors Yossi Govrin and Sherry Frumkin. Based in an historic hangar at the Santa Monica Airport, ARENA 1 invites internationally known as well as newly established curators to develop innovative and compelling exhibitions.

Co-Director Yossi Govrin said he was looking forward to the opening. He has always been fond of Japanese art and wanted to feature some work at the Santa Monica Art Studios. “I contacted Kio Griffith, scholar and an artist, with numerous shows in the USA and the Far east and have asked him to provide me with a list of artists and a complete proposal for a show,” said Govrin.

The group exhibition in Arena 1 is curated by Kio Griffith who is also an artist. He said he was excited to once again show in the U.S. “Japan still operates on an old system of – mastery equals authority equals respect therefore you newly graduate need to toil in the trenches for the next two decades,” said Griffith. “There’s the super famous group who get around with carte blanche; Murakami, Morimura, Mori, Nara; and there’s the newly graduates and mid-career group who have access to mostly rental galleries. If you’re an emerging artist, it’s better to participate in group shows organized outside the country including biennials and triennials.”

In the South Wing of SMAS, Los Angeles artist, Stephanie Visser’s abstract paintings will be on view. Visser has been creating art her entire life and knew early on she was supposed to be an artist. Visser’s art features abstract painting along with traditional representational and mixed media. One of the works that will be showcased in this exhibition is New Work Untitled #2.

“This piece was inspired by my desire to paint large format pieces in the simplest way possible. Without brushes. This piece was created using only a large masonry trowel from the hardware store. I liked the way it kept me from fixating on an area and forced simplification, which was complemented by the simple color palette.

Visser is a prolific artist who consistently works on her craft. Her art has been shown at bG Gallery at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica as well as FABstudio, also in Santa Monica and Wallspace in Hollywood CA. Scott Horton, Space Cowboy, mixed media, 36x48"
Scott Horton will be showing a selection of his pop/street art. It was his college art teacher who first fueled his dream of becoming an artist.  “He recognized my talents encouraged me to create large pieces of work and experiment with various media.”

Today he continues to try new applications and approaches. “I have worked in oil, watercolor, illustrative board and acrylic. I have sculpted in clay and metal. Recently, mixed media and digital art has my attention.”

Horton said he is looking forward to exhibiting his work at Santa Monica Art Studios. “It's a great space. Feels like a community atmosphere. I'm grateful to be showing in it,” said the artist. Horton has and edginess to his art and has been painting since he was in his twenties. Iconic pop culture symbols such as Route 66, the Beatles and movie trivia have influenced Horton. “My ‘voice’ in art expresses song lyrics as symbols, and famous icons as part of both past and present culture,” explained Horton. The opening reception takes place on Saturday, June 13th from 6-9pm at Santa Monica Art Studios, (3026 Airport Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90405) http://www.santamonicaartstudios.com/
