York regional police officer killed in early morning crash

It is with deep sadness and regret that York Regional Police advises of the on-duty death of an officer this morning at approximately 6:10 a.m.

Constable Garrett Styles, 32, a seven-year veteran, was struck by a vehicle on Highway 48 near Herald Road in the Town of East Gwillimbury shortly after 5 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle has been transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The York Regional Police Homicide Unit and officers with the Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating.

On behalf of all members of York Regional Police, Chief Eric Jolliffe offers heartfelt condolences to Constable Styles’ family and friends.

Constable Styles joined York Regional Police as a Cadet-in-Training in December 2003 and became a  Constable in May 2004. He worked Uniform Patrol in #2 District, covering Richmond Hill and most recently in #1 District, covering the Towns of Newmarket, Aurora and East Gwillimbury.

Constable Styles is survived by his wife, Melissa, and two small children.

Further details will be made available with respect to the visitation and funeral.
