UPDATE: The Sunshine Coast RCMP have identified the deceased male located in the water off Gower Point in Gibsons on Monday evening as a 62 year old resident of Gibsons. Police are withholding the identity of the man until next of kin can be contacted. The cause of death is still unknown as police are awaiting the results of an autopsy that has been scheduled in the coming days.

Background:

The Sunshine Coast RCMP are asking for assistance from the public with respect to the discovery of a body of a deceased man off the Coast of Gibsons on Monday night.

On July 11th, 2011 at 2007hrs the Auxiliary Coast Guard were conducting routine patrols and practice in the area of Gibsons BC when they were notified of a deceased male floating in the water approximately 1/4 mile off Gower Point, Gibsons, BC. The Sunshine Coast RCMP were notified and the Coast Guard hovercraft was called to assist with the retrieval of the body. The deceased is described as Caucasian, 50-60 years of age, full beard ( brown ), short hair, approx 183 cm and in excess of 100kg. The deceased was wearing a red short sleeve shirt, black sweat pants and black running shoes with velcro fasteners. The identity of the deceased and the exact cause of death are still unknown and this investigation remains ongoing.
