Goldsmith resigns; Bloomberg criticized over his actions

Mayor Micheal R. Bloomberg, after a three day long silence announced the resignation of Deputy Mayor Mr. Goldsmith,  having stated the reason that “Mr. Goldsmith was leaving to pursue private-sector opportunities in infrastructure finance”.  On July 30^th Mr. Goldsmith had been charged with domestic violence and was arrested right after a fight with his wife, Margaret Goldsmith.

Bloomberg has been criticized with concealing the real reason behind his ex-deputy mayor’s resignation. However, he told reporters through a 12-minute news conference right outside the Christian Center in Brooklyn that “I make no apologies for either the fact that Mr. Goldsmith has left city service, or for treating the Goldsmith family with basic decency as he left.”

Mr.Bloomberg believes that it was not his duty to announce his ex-mayors private affairs to the media. He even went to the extent of saying that “I have long believed that public officials are all too willing to humiliate the people who work for them whenever it’s politically convenient or advantageous. It’s an outrage, and I refuse to play that game.”

However, political analysts have severely criticized the mayor for his actions saying he has “lied to the people”. Some maintain that in the end people only care about good governance and infrastructure and this news will die down with time. In any case, charges against Goldsmith have been dropped by his wife.
