Courtesy of a string of powerful debate performances, Mitt Romney has all of a sudden generated new found support from major donors and elected officials, some of whom had resisted his previous entreaties, as people across the GOP grow more accepting of the presidential contender as the party’s standard-bearer.

Longtime strategist Ed Rollins said “He’s viewed as an almost inevitable candidate, He’s the heavy favorite.” Ed Rollins up until last month was managing the election campaign of Re. Michele Bachmann, who is one of the contenders for the election.

According to the new poll released by Wall Street Journal-NBC businessman Herman Cain for the first time is slightly ahead of Romney. He is at 27% compared to Romney’s 23% with Gov. Rick Perry with 16% at number three, but despite that the party establishment is favoring Romney.

Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) and former House speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) became the latest in a string of current and former elected officials who have announced their support for Romney over the past week. Former Republican National Committee chairman Jim Nicholson, hedge fund manager Paul Singer and Home Depot co-founder Ken Langone are among the major Republican fundraisers supporting the candidate.
