An Ottawa driver guilty of hitting five cyclists in Kanata and running off from the scene in 2009 has been sentenced Monday to two years less a day in prison and banned from driving for a year.

47-year-old Sommit Luangpakham was proved guilty of all ten charges of imperil driving leading to physical harm and fleeing the scene of an accident in October.

“I am deeply sorry for all of the pain I have caused you and your families,” Luangpakham said Monday when he addressed the court and victims for the first time. “I did not intend for this to happen. I wish I could turn back time so I could do things differently. I am praying for you all to get well. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.”

Justice Monique Mativier sentenced the man to nine months for dangerous driving and 15 months for leaving the scene of the crash, which will be served consecutively.
