Fire has been spreading in a self-storage facility near Toronto since early Monday morning and firefighters fear the building might collapse.

The Save and Secure Self Storage located at 97 Pelham Ave. went on fire around 6 a.m. The building is near Dundas Street West and Dupont Street.

Due to the fire, the entire area was covered with black clouds for hours, which forced firefighters to retract from the blaze as flames could be seen shooting from the windows. Hence, nearby schools were evacuated early Monday morning.

Toronto police have cleared the scene; however, firefighters continue to battle the fire from a defensive position.

According to Toronto Fire Services, firefighters found it difficult to travel through the high security storage facility and found the pockets of “deep seated burning of debris.”

So far, no injuries have been reported.

Toronto Fire cannot estimate the damage yet.
