During the trial, Tooba Mohammad Yahya, 42, shed tears while testifying Monday morning. The Montreal woman is accused of killing three of her daughters and her husband’s first wife for the sake of protecting family honour.

Mohammad Shafia, his second wife Tooba Yahya, and their 21-year-old son Hamed have pled not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder. All three have been accused of killing four Shafia women.

Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, along with Rona Mohammad, Shafia’s first wife, were found dead in a vehicle at the bottom of a canal in Kingston on June 30, 2009.

Yahya testified that her children were never penalized physically, except for one incident in which Shafia hit her children as they returned home at night after curfew. According to her, Shafia’s preferred method of punishing the children was to badger them.

“He used to talk a lot,” she told jurors.

“He was persistent on something. He used to talk about some mistake which the children did.

“He used to go on and continuously; he was just swearing at them and continuously talking about that for weeks.”

According to Crown prosecutors, Muhammad Shafia was particularly disturbed that his daughters were dating boys. Allegedly, the Shafia women were murdered to restore family honour.

Shafia honour-killing trial, which began in October, is likely to conclude this month.
