Investigators from the Peel Regional Police Homicide and Missing Persons Bureau are advising that the on-going investigation into the disappearance in 2009 of 27 year old Poonam Litt of Brampton has culminated in the arrest of a third party, 42 year old Skinder Punia of Brampton.
On February 5th, 2009 Poonam Litt was reported missing after she failed to appear for work. 21 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau commenced an extensive investigation and public appeal however the whereabouts of Mrs. Litt remained a mystery until recently.
On February 22nd, 2012, the Ontario Provincial Police – Caledon Division responded to a report of found human remains on a residential property on Willoughby Road, Caledon. The remains were later identified by the Office of The Chief Coroner – Ontario Forensic Pathology Service to be those of the victim.
On April 13th 2012, Poonam Litt’s sister-in-law 35 year old Mandeep Punia of Brampton was arrested and charged with her murder. The victim’s father-in-law, 63 year old Kulwant Singh Litt also of Brampton, was also arrested and charged with Accessory After the Fact to Murder.
The accused, Skinder Punia, is being charged with Accessory After the Fact to Murder and will be making a first appearance this morning at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton. He is the husband of Mandeep Punia and brother-in-law to the victim.
