StatsCan Report Shows Foreign-Born Residents Now in Canada Are More Than Ever

The first issue of Canada’s controversial census replacement survey showed that there are more foreign-born residents in the country now than ever before, as the rates of such population increase more than in a century. The report points out that these people are young, suburban, and mainly from Asia, while also depicting, at the same time, that many Africans are arriving in growing numbers as well.

However, the historical comparisons are very less and far between in the National Household Survey, which Statistics Canada was ordered to perform on request of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, while replacing the cancelled long-form census of the past. This latest survey of almost three million people depicted that that Canada is a home to almost 6.8 million foreign-born residentsup from 3.8 per cent in the 2006 census, i.e. an overall 20.6 per cent of the population while compared to 19.8 per cent in 2006. Additionally, this rate is the highest in the G8 group of rich countries. The survey also shows that the populations of aboriginal have swelled by 20 per cent over the past five years, which now constitutes of almost 4.3 per cent of Canada’s population.

The director general of the census, Marc Hamel, stated that Statistics Canada is not showing much comparison with the previous report because many comparisons with the past can only be made reliably at a national or provincial level. Hamel stated “For a voluntary survey, it has very good quality. We have a high quality of results at a national level.”
