In a recently released official press release by Toronto’s medical officer of health, Dr. David McKeown, has revealed that “new lab results indicate that the maple bacon jam, which is one component of the cronut burger, is the cause of food-borne illness at the CNE.” He elucidated that “we have ensured the contaminated product is not served. There is no risk to the public.”

Laboratory results received on Friday concluded that the samples of the cheeseburger-donut-croissant hybrid contained the Staphylococcus aureus toxin, due to which a total of 223 people had contacted Toronto Public Health reporting symptoms of food-borne illness on Tuesday morning, in result of eating at the CNE between Aug. 16-20. It was after interviewing 150 of those people that Toronto Public Health found the cronut burger common among all effected.

The supplier of the jam, Le Dolci, has voluntarily announced to cease production of the jam, while it was disclosed that it will also be officially disallowed to distribute its food products as Toronto Public Health continues to investigate the company in order to determine the cause of contamination. In a statement published on its Facebook page, Epic Burgers and Waffles stated that the joint has decided to end business with Le Dolci and the cronut burger. It stated that “the jam was used as a topping solely on one of our menu items, the Cronut burger. As a result of this finding Epic Burgers and Waffles have decided to remove the Cronut Burger from our menu and we will no longer do business with the aforementioned supplier.”
