Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced to have hired a new top spokesman for his office as the big day approaches for his government to return to the Commons this fall and face a bombardment of harsh questions on everything from the Senate expenses scandal to an elusive job training deal with the provinces. Prime Minister’s Office announced to have replaced Andrew MacDougall with Jason MacDonald as director of communications, who had until now most recently ‎served as chief spokesman for Aboriginal Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt.

By profession, Mr. MacDonald is a veteran public relations manager and has previously worked for Carleton University and the CBC.‎ Later he also worked as the former aboriginal affairs minister, John Duncan, until he ran for Tim Hudak’s Ontario Progressive Conservatives in the 2011 provincial election. Mr. MacDonald took part in the elections as a PC candidate in the riding of Ottawa South, which was an important seat previously held by then-Liberal premier Dalton McGuinty, though he lost it by a margin of more than 15 percentage points.

Addressing early rumors regarding his anticipated appointment at the time, Mr. MacDonald completely refrained from discussing the matter, stating that “I’m happily serving Minister Valcourt.” However, the announcement was made public by Mr. MacDougall on Twitter, where he disclosed his successor’s appointment on Thursday morning, congratulating Mr. MacDonald on his new post. The previous director of communications for Mr. Harper resigned his post last week and is heading for a public relations firm in London.
