According to recently released BMO Holiday Spending Outlook for 2013, shoppers in Alberta are devotedly encircling Black Friday on their Christmas calendars. The report released on Friday alleged that almost 50 per cent of consumers in the province have already made plans to shop this Black Friday, i.e. the day following American Thanksgiving, which is customarily seen as an indicator of the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in Canada.
Additionally, the spending outlook alleged that it expects each shopper to at least spend $330 on average. Comparing with the statistics gathered last year, the report revealed that 47 per cent of Canadian consumers have planned to shop this year, which is an increased from last year’s figure of 41 per cent. Additionally, the average expected spending of each shopper in 2012 was pegged at $292. Apart from that, the survey conducted by Pollara also found that 59 per cent of shoppers have also planned to shop on December 26, Boxing Day, this year, though it is a decrease from 62 per cent in 2012.
Chief Economist at BMO Capital Markets, Doug Porter, stated that “Canadian retailers are rising to the challenge of the lure of cross-border shopping, as they look to deal with the Canadian dollar still not far from parity, a significant – although narrowing – gap between Canadian and U.S. retail prices and the more generous duty-free limits.” He added that “Canadian holiday retail sales receipts, excluding auto and gasoline sales, should increase by roughly two per cent, year over year, in the November to December period.”
