Cyclist killed on the streets of Hamilton, Ontario

The Hamilton Police Service Collision Reconstruction Unit is seeking the assistance of the public in identifying the cyclist involved in a serious collision that happened in downtown Hamilton yesterday.

On Wednesday, August 11th, 2010 at approximately 3:00 p.m., a serious injury collision occurred on John St. S. and Forest Ave. involving a bicycle and motor vehicle. A male believed to be in his mid to late 40’s was riding a bicycle northbound on John St. S. in the east curb lane when he struck a Dodge Caravan traveling eastbound on Forest Ave. across John St.

The cyclist received serious head injuries and was transported to the Hamilton General Hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.

The male cyclist’s identity has yet to be confirmed. The bicycle he was riding is described as a red “Supercycle” with a rope tied around the handlebars. He was wearing a red/black plaid t-shirt and beige shorts. He was in possession of a red coloured lanyard with the words “Rosso Bambino” written on it and with six keys attached.

Hamilton Police are asking anyone with information about the identity of the cyclist to contact Det/Cst. Vandercraats, Collision Reconstruction Unit at 905-546-4753.

UPDATE………………………………August 12th, 2010

Hamilton Police have identified the man riding on his bicycle and involved in the serious collision yesterday at the intersection of John St. S. and Forest Ave. He remains in hospital and in critical condition.

UPDATE……September 9th, 2010

The cyclist, whose identity is being withheld at the request of the family, was removed from life support on August 18th, 2010 and succumbed to his injuries. The investigation is still continuing. This is the City’s 14th traffic fatality.
