Canada’s Justice Minister, Peter MacKay, has promised that a major new bill aiming to reform the country’s prostitution laws will be before MPs “very soon.” Addressing reporters on Monday, the minster stated that “time is marching on and so we intend to bring forward that legislation this spring.”

According to an iconic Supreme Court ruling from December, the top court placed a ban on brothels, communicating for the purposes of prostitution and living off its avails are unconstitutional. Additionally, it instructed the Parliament to draft the laws within a year before the current provisions are wiped off the books. Consequently, MacKay has until Christmas to have his reforms passed though the Commons and Senate, and get it signed by the governor general. According to MacKay, the bill will primarily focus on protecting vulnerable people. He explained that “we know that there is tremendous violence and vulnerability associated with prostitution” and that “prostitutes are predominantly victims. They have very much, in some cases, run out of options before entering this particular pursuit.”

However, the minister refused to confirm if it means the bill will bring the so-called Nordic model to Canada. Instead, MacKay alleged that “we’ve looked at a lot of different options and a lot of different models” and “the Nordic model is one. I can assure you of this: it will be a Canadian solution.” Moreover, he explained that whatever is contained in the bill, there will also need to be “support mechanisms” to help free victims of sex trafficking.

  1. It is necessary to legalize and tax prostitution as soon as possible. If the Costitutional Court has sacomment_ID that pimping and brothels are not conforming with Canadian Costitution, it would be the same for the Nordic Model, which is against the simply buying of sex!

  2. Everything harper and the corruption party touch, turns to shxt ! Everything out of harpers yap is shxt ! Everything out of mackays yap is shxt ! It’d be best if ALL these useless losers took their cyancomment_IDe medication ! Then sooner the better !

  3. Hope it is the Nordic model. I was prostituted for 10 years and became extremely depressed and at one point suiccomment_IDal because of the trauma that ensued. Women deserve better than to be bought and sold as commodities. It is time for TRUE gender equality in this country, and for married men to commit to their families rather than take away from them by paying for sex with strangers!

Prohibition is the water of Mafia fish and it is better to avocomment_ID it where it is possible as the paying sex among adult and consentient people. With the Nordic Model the situation of Sex Workers would be worst. It is clear that prostitution has got never cleared and reduced by the prohibtion laws.

Money does not equal consent. While I sold my body over 5 thousand times, I never once was pimped or trafficked. I was simply so far in debt and as a single woman needing tuition money, I had no other options at the time. I told every john that I loved my job and was empowered and all that other bs women say to get their basic needs met. Prostitution is nothing ascomment_IDe from a gendered practice based upon socio-economic inequality and marginalization. I think you need to further educate yourself.

I know that prostitution is a sex by low cost and a lot of women has come back so times to this kind of job. I think that you must see this kind of world on another way and you must know that this one is a right of sex way choice and it must be respected in a democratic society, which must stay without “Prostitution-Phobia”.
