Assiniboine Park Zoo has announced plans to increase its admission fee by almost 80% as it bumps the cost of admission for an adult from $10.24 to $18.50. The change will take effect from July 3 onwards as the zoo remains closed between June 23 and July 2 in order to prepare for the opening of the Journey to Churchill exhibit.

The CEO of Assiniboine Park Conservancy, Margaret Redmond, explained that the surge in the cost of admission fees is being implement to make the zoo more self-sufficient. According to Redmond, city funding will be limited on the zoo’s operating costs as it reduces to $4 million by 2015. She revealed that “capital upgrades are paid out of capital dollars.” It was elucidated that the money gathered from all levels of government and private fundraising efforts will go to upgrades like Journey to Churchill. The zoo plans to use admission fees for operating costs like the cost to hire and maintain custodial, maintenance, and other staff for the new 10-acre exhibit.

In a statement, Redmond alleged that “this increase does that and reflects the value of what is offered.” She revealed that “with the Journey to Churchill exhibit, a family could spend a productive day going through the zoo, so we are certain they will see the value in the rates that we set.” In addition that, the zoo also plans a $10 show on Tuesdays after July 8 to offer a more affordable entrance once per week.
