Authorities have once again arrested a federal institution escapee, 55-year-old Robert Gaudette, on Sunday night in Quebec City after he escaped from Laval last week. Gaudette was intercepted by Quebec City police on a sidewalk downtown and did not resist arrest. Gaudette was imprisoned for life sentence for the second-degree murder of his wife. He is now scheduled to be presented before a judge at the Quebec City courthouse on Monday for his escape from prison.

Gaudette managed to successfully escape from the minimum-security Federal Training Centre on Montée St-François St. in eastern Laval during the night on July 29. He was found to have been missing during a routine head count of inmates by staff. 59-year-old Claude Hamelin from Rigaud, who is believed to have helped Gaudette escape, was also arrested by police last Thursday. Hamelin was presented in Valleyfield courthouse on the charge of conspiracy after the fact on Friday. Hamelin also has his own criminal record and hence served time at the same penitentiary as Gaudette.

Gaudette was sentenced for life after he was charged with second-degree murder in 2002. Gaudette killed his wife, Cindy Bouchard, by strangling her during an argument on April 27, 2000. Gaudette reportedly informed Montreal police that Bouchard was kidnapped by a gang because of her gambling debts and later changed his story to claim that her former employers kidnapped her to retrieve incriminating documents from her. Eventually, Gaudette confessed to murder after police found Bouchard’s body in a garbage bin in an industrial parking lot in Anjou.
