Friends and family packed a Scarborough church on Saturday to say their last goodbye to the 14-year-old girl, Amaria Diljohn, run over and killed by a TTC bus on Dec. 19. The funeral was arranged at Malvern Christian Assembly, i.e. located at Neilson Rd. and Sheppard Ave. E.

Quite noticeably, many attending the sentimental ceremony were total strangers to the girl but were moved by her tragic story and could not resist showing support to the girl’s family. A Malvern resident attending the ceremony, Michael Williams, alleged that “I’m just grateful I could come and pay my last respects.” The media was not allowed to attend the ceremony but the reports of those who attended confirmed that the service included singing, music and a eulogy delivered by the girl’s grandparents. Toronto Police have confirmed that the bus driver failed to stay at the scene of the fatality and that the teen was hit by a TTC bus. The heartbroken family has received up to $15,000 in donations from members of the public.

Amaria was laid to rest in Pine Ridge Memorial Gardens in Ajax after the service. Speaking about her schoolmate’s death, Jyael Lalic, said that “it’s still shocking.” Diljohn’s senior at the Woburn Collegiate, Lalic, says that “it seems from listening to everyone that spoke (at the funeral) that she was very well loved,” adding that “it’s sad that she had to leave.” Another fellow student, Shailana Williams, said that “you just see somebody, and the next day they’re gone. So I guess you just got to be really careful not to waste your life.”
