While the administration and teachers are preparing to open schools next week, several parents are channeling their opposition to Ontario government’s controversial new sex education curriculum by keeping their children at home on the opening day. The parents protesting in Thorncliffe Park on Saturday afternoon shouted “Shame! Shame!” and “We say no!” in a demonstration against the new curriculum.

The controversial curriculum was passed in the spring by Premier Kathleen Wynne’s government. It includes teachings on same-sex relationships, consent, online bullying and sexting. Moreover, students will also have the opportunity to learn about masturbation, gender expression and contraception. Education minister, Liz Sandals, stresses that the changes made to the Physical and Health Education curriculum are only meant to bring Ontario at par with other provinces, highlighting that it is the first update in 17 years.

However, the multicultural mix of parents and children protesting outside Thorncliffe Park housing complex used microphones to air their dissent. They described the new curriculum as “dirty” and warned that “on the opening day of school, we are not sending our children. But our children will be on the roads. We will be having our home school on these streets.” In a similar threat back in May, Thorncliffe Park Public School had one of the highest numbers of absent students. Especially because it has a considerably large population of Muslim students. Ryan Bird confessed that overall 34,700 elementary school students across the Toronto District School Board were absent the day of the protest in May.
