toronto, montreal mayors sign exclusive cooperation dealToronto Mayor John Tory and Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre have signed a “historic cooperation agreement” that promises to allow both cities to work together in attracting jobs and investment. The agreement was signed at Montreal City Hall on Saturday morning prior to Tory taking a Toronto Blue Jays exhibition game with Coderre at Olympic Stadium.

According to the agreement, it will enable Montreal and Toronto to share information and best practices in five specific areas: governance, economic vitality, the environment, social development and living together. Moreover, the agreement is drafted in a language that calls on both cities to work together in promoting the game of baseball with the hopes of eventually luring a Major League Baseball team back to Montreal and “reestablishing another great sports rivalry” that ended when the Expos left town.

In his comments on the deal on Saturday morning, Tory explained that Montreal and Toronto’s goals going forward will be best achieved by working together and not by competing against one another. He elucidated that “what we have figured out in this competitive world is that the competition for jobs, for investment and for social development is not between Montreal and Toronto.” It was added that “our goals will be best achieved when we work together and put the resources of the country’s two biggest cities together to get things done.” Tory said that Toronto and Montreal together represent an “unbelievable global powerhouse to take out into the world and sell as places to invest.”
