On Friday March 4th, 2011 at approximately 2:30 p.m., Hamilton Police responded to an apartment complex on Sanford Ave. N. near Barton St., for an assault report. Police spoke with the victim, a 36 yr. old woman, who alleged that since February 15th, 2011, she has been receiving repeated and unwanted phone calls from a former tenant of the building, later identified as 49 yr. old Fletchenal WALTERS. During these calls WALTERS repeatedly made sexual advances toward the victim that she rejected.
On March 4th, 2011 between approximately 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., the victim was at home alone when she heard a knock at her unlocked door. Believing the person to be one of her children, the victim called for the person at the door to enter. At this time WALTERS entered the apartment. He was told to leave but instead WALTERS sexually assaulted the victim. A struggle ensued and the victim was able to break free, stating that she would call the police if he did not leave. WALTERS immediately left the residence and as the victim attempted to lock the door behind him, WALTERS forced his way back into the apartment to retrieve his jacket, leaving immediately thereafter.
Investigators from the Hamilton Police Service Victims of Crime Unit, Sexual Assault Unit continued to investigate and determined the identity of the suspect. At approximately 5:30 p.m., the suspect was arrested at his east Hamilton home. He was held for a bail hearing.
