The day 2 left the New Zealand in the driver's seat, but only just. They did well to get a slender 51 run lead and the openers came out looking to attack.
Martin Guptill played well for his 42, but a couple of blows by Narsingh Deonarine at the end of the day gave West Indies a reason to cheer. Now New Zealand should take the Gayle factor seriously into consideration when they come out to set a target today.
Marlon Samuels stroked 15 fours and four sixes to reach triple figures. It was his highest Test score, beating the 117 he made earlier against England at Trent Bridge in May. The century was his first on home soil at Sabina Park and first in the Caribbean.
Samuels has dedicated the century to the people of Jamaica who were celebrating their 50th year of independence and said: "This was for Jamaica. This was for the people of my country as we celebrate Jamaica 50. It is a special time for Jamaica so I came out and put in my piece to celebrate. It was good to be in front of my people doing well again."
West Indies currently lead the series 1-0. If they manage to win this match, it will be their first clean sweep victory in a Test series in ten years.
