War Bride Examines Racial Presumptions in Post-WWII California
T.U. Studios (North Hollywood, CA)

This smart new work from SkyPilot’s resident playwright Samantha Macher looks at the aftermath of war and a Japanese woman who returns to California with a local hero. Set in Merced, not far from the Japanese internment camp in Manzanar, the story involves the women in Private Alvin Rhodes’s life: his mother Catherine, the girls from the neighborhood and Yumi, his new bride. Although the local community is shocked, with the help of Catherine’s friend Richard, Yumi slowly reveals her story to her mother-in-law while challenging her ideas. The play combines witty dialog and Butoh-influenced contemporary dance to tell a poignant story.
