Tamales de Puerco is a trilingual play in English, Spanish and American Sign Language that tells the story of an undocumented Mexican tamale seller who must find a way to maneuver through three cultures at once after learning that her son is deaf. Her husband, unable to cope, resorts to abuse and violence. She is determined that she and her son will survive and deal with his disability, so she begins the long, laborious journey to overcome her own self-imposed communication handicaps. A deaf social worker attempting to help them discovers that she too must overcome self-imposed obstacles to achieve what she truly desires.
