American Cinematheque presents a double-feature screening of two timeless musicals featuring legendary film star Debbie Reynolds, who will be in attendance and participate in a discussion of her work between film screenings. First up is Singin’ in the Rain, one of the greatest and most beloved screen musicals of all time. This song-filled gem from the golden age of cinema stars co-director Gene Kelly as silent movie idol Don Lockwood, a man whose career is in jeopardy with the introduction of talking pictures — until he hooks up with lovely ingenue Debbie Reynolds. Experience all the spectacle, dancing and music of such numbers as “Singin’ in the Rain,” “Make ’em Laugh” and “Good Morning” in this dazzling film that set the standard for motion picture musicals. Next is The Unsinkable Molly Brown, a big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical that earned star Debbie Reynolds an Oscar nomination. Reynolds gives a spirited and hilarious performance as the legendary woman who, after rising from rags to riches, went on to famously survive the sinking of the Titanic.
