A hilarious ride complete with audience participation, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee follows an eclectic group of students vying for a spelling championship while trying to navigate the trials and tribulations of puberty. As the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, they also divulge funny and touching stories from their home life. Six spellers enter, but only one will leave. At least the losers get a juice box! And that might include you — three guest spellers will be chosen from the audience to participate in the contest. The Tony-winning creative team behind the musical has conjured up a quirky but lovable cast of characters that you can’t help but root for, as well as humorous and catchy songs that capture teenage angst at its finest, from “Woe Is Me” to “My Unfortunate Erection (Chip’s Lament).”
