Called Dvorak’s greatest symphony by scholar John Clapham, the Seventh Symphony headlines this Los Angeles Philharmonic concert, which also includes Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and, on October 19, also features his First Symphony. Basque conductor Juanjo Mena returns to the LA Phil with these two contrasting symphonies, the light and bright “Classical” tweak by Prokofiev and Dvorák’s intensely personal symphony composed for his country. Fresh from his Hollywood Bowl triumph with Tchaikovsky, young pianist Behzod Abduraimov performs Prokofiev’s concerto in his Walt Disney Concert Hall debut.
