The line between devotion and obsession gets blurred in the powerfully theatrical Dido/Bluebeard. Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas is an intimately scaled tragedy about an ill-fated queen and Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle is a suspenseful orchestral showpiece that centers on an impulsive young bride and the dark truths she uncovers about her husband. Helmed by the director of LA Opera’s popular recent production of The Magic Flute, this pairing of one-act masterpieces is performed in English and Hungarian with projected English translations.
