Last week, I attended the soft-opening of the new and stunning Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie, located inside Toronto’s newest luxury hotel, the Shangri-La. I’ve been a faithfulCaudalie fan for a while now, but I have never experienced the magic of hammam before, and was really excited to give it a try. And boy, was I in for a treat!

A mix of Old World hammam culture and modern sensibility, the traditional treatments on offer, according to Miraj owner Surinder Bains, are “detoxification in the highest form”. And it truly felt that way.

As a hammam newbie, I was recommended the Hammam & Gommage treatment, which consists of two parts: hammam (steam treatment to detox your body) and gommage (full body exfoliating scrub). For the hammam portion of the treatment, I was ushered into my own private hammam, where I was asked to disrobe (disposable undergarments and sarong are provided, if you are shy), and after a hot water rinse, I got to lie down on warm Jerusalem gold marble for about 15 minutes, while the room filled up with steam. In those 15 minutes, I could actually feel my body unwind, with pores opening up, and sweat pouring out. It was a deeply relaxing experience, just me and my body surrounded by warm, welcoming steam. It felt glorious.

After my steam time was up, I was asked to move to the front of the hammam, where I lay down on the marble once again, only this time, to be covered in black Moroccan soap, which was then scrubbed away, along with dead skin cells, and other impurities of which the hammam helped me rid my body. I asked for mild exfoliation as my skin tends to be on the sensitive side, and it was perfect. With just enough pressure to cleanse my skin, and not enough to damage it.

Once my esthetician was finished, I felt like my body was weightless. I floated up from my marble “bed” and let the water wash away the black soap and dead skin. And speaking of my skin…it felt buttery soft…not a bump in sight. For the record, this is how I would like to spend every morning of every day of my life…getting steamed and scrubbed, and feeling rejuvenated.

But I was still not finished with my Miraj Hammam visit…a 30-minute full-body massage was waiting for me in another room. And I highly…HIGHLY recommend that you follow up your own Hammam & Gommage treatment with a massage too. Apparently, traditionally, that is what you are supposed to do anyway…because once your skin has been steamed and cleansed, there’s nothing like a little massage to make your body feel whole again. Needless to say, once my 30 minutes were up, I felt even more relaxed than before…I didn’t think it was possible.

After my massage, I was escorted to a beautifully appointed room to relax (as if I could be any more relaxed), and take my time easing back into reality. And to sweeten my visit further, I was offered minty Moroccan tea and baklava – both sinfully delicious. In case you have difficulty keeping up, let me rehash it for you: steam, exfoliation, cleansing, massage, tea and sweets. It all felt a little indulgent, but oh-so-very good. I don’t remember the last time I got to pamper myself…and my Miraj Hammam Spa visit was certainly what the doctor prescribed.

On my way out of the spa, I picked up a few of my Caudalie skincare favorites, like the Vinoperfect serum and night cream. If you’ve never tried Caudalie’s miraculous products before, you should definitely give them a whirl. They work like a charm, and make my skin glow after every application.

The Hammam & Gommage treatment at Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie is definitely an experience that everyone should enjoy at least once in their lifetime, and if you’d like to invite your mother, or sister, or husband to experience it with you, the spa accommodates such visits too. And what an amazing way to treat the ones you love! I, myself, have already booked my next appointment at the spa, and will surely be treating my loved ones to a visit. I’d rather do something great for their well-being than get them yet another handbag/blender/Justin Bieber doll.

If you have any questions about the treatments that I have received, please don’t hesitate to ask me in the comments, or via email, and I’ll do my best to address your questions. It was truly one of the best spa experiences I’ve ever had, and I will surely be back again.
