In the field hockey, the day 11 begins with the game between Australia and Pakistan, on Tuesday August 7, 2012 at Riverbank Arena, Olympic Park. This match will decide who been stepped into the semi-final. If Pakistan won this match they will be qualify for the semi-final along with Great Britain if they also won their last match of the group against Spain.
Pakistan cannot afford a draw or loss against the Australia, as draw or loss finishes their hope of qualifying for the semi-finals. It will be exciting to know that four teams of Group A – Pakistan, Australia, Britain and Spain – have equal chances to qualify for the semi-final stage.
From Group B, Netherlands have already qualified for the first semifinal spot with a 3-1 win against Germany. Now Germany needs to take at least one point in their game on Tuesday against New Zealand or look forward to a South Korean loss to make in to the next stage.
On the other hand Australia, on eight points, needs at least a draw today against Pakistan, who has seven, to confirm their semi-final place. Pakistan defeated the world champions by 4-3 in the final of a 3-nation tournament in Perth, Australia in November 2011 so they have a psychological edge over Australia.
Australians started their tournament looking unbeatable with extremely sturdy start, but the preliminary round action looks out of their hands and now they find themselves in a very tight position for the last game of the group to decide their fate. It’s a do or die match for both the teams the winner will qualify for the next round while loser has to sit back and watch for 5th or 6th position.
