The saying “Good fences make good neighbors” has been around in one form or another for a very long time.

Of course, a lot of American progressives and liberals disagree with that notion, at least where erection of a wall, fence, or other barrier across our southern border is concerned — even though a significant number of these critics, at least when they are also a part of the privileged elite, live in manses behind high, fortified walls to keep out the riff-raff.

Apparently Pakistan disagrees with that kind of borderless worldview.

Media are reporting that Pakistan has begun erecting a security fence along the “Durand Line”, the international boundary that separates it from Afghanistan. It has done so over the objections of the Afghan government. The reason? To curb illegal cross-border incursions of militants, radicals, and terrorists between the two countries.

How and why is it that so many in our own society — including, sadly, even some members of Congress — don’t comprehend the necessity of such a common-sense measure?
