EPS North Division officers have charged the 25-year-old man arrested on Saturday after he locked himself inside his residence and refused to come out for police after officers responded to a report of an alleged assault.

Rodrigo Bergmann was charged with assault, uttering threats to cause damage to property, careless use/storage of a firearm, weapon or ammunition (x4), knowingly possess an unauthorized firearm (x3), possession of an offensive weapon dangerous to the public (x4), unauthorized possession of a weapon (x3), possession of a weapon obtained by crime, and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

Background (on June 5, 2010):

EPS officers have arrested a 25-year-old male who barricaded himself inside a townhouse for several hours today.

Police received a call at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2010 about a male suspect who was allegedly uttering threats against a woman. The woman was also allegedly assaulted. Initial investigations revealed the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute.

The man barricaded himself inside his home at 134 Avenue and 43 Street and did not respond when police asked him to exit the residence. Police believed there to be several firearms inside the home and evacuated five neighbouring homes for safety. No shots were fired and no one was reported injured.

Officers negotiated with the man for almost 11 hours before he surrendered himself to police without incident. The 25-year-old male was taken to hospital for examination. He remains in police custody and charges are pending. Investigators searched the accused’s home on a warrant and two firearms were located inside the townhouse.

Residents in adjacent townhouses were let back into their homes just before 11 p.m.
