City TV reported that on Friday, a 19-year-old autistic man from Barrie, Jordan Morrison was killed in a bar fight at a resort near Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Five men, believed to be Canadian, were taken into police custody.

CBC is reporting today, Sunday that two of the men have now been charged with murder. The unnamed men, supposedly 21 and 27 years old, could be facing up to 30 years in prison if convicted. A statement on the charges is expected on Monday from the local prosecutor.

The alleged incident took place at a bar at the Grand Paradise Bavaro resort. Five men, thought to be Canadian, supposedly beat the victim to death. An unnamed witness explained one of the five behaved belligerently towards a woman and the Barrie man stepped in to defend her. One of the five hit the Barrie man, knocked him down, kicked him in the face then the others continued to hit him.

CityNews has spoken with the family who are devastated by the news. Vanessa Morrison, the victim’s cousin is quoted as saying, "It’s just a shock – it really is. He was only 19. He had a whole life ahead of himself. And he had lots of goals he had set for himself. It’s really a tragedy. It is very surreal actually. You never think that something like this would ever happen to your family.”

CityNews also reports receiving the following statement from a Canadian government official:

"Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada is aware of the death of a Canadian citizen in the Dominican Republic.  Consular officials at the Canadian Embassy in Santo Domingo and at the Punta Cana Office are working closely with local authorities to gather additional information and are providing consular assistance to the family," it read.
